May 2019
Hooray for May! 2 more months people! Grade 1/2s are preparing for the Volunteer Tea this month, singing "What I Wouldn't Do" by Serena Ryder, spoken word poetry as well as a song on the xylophones! Grade 3/4s couldn't be happier, now that they have their recorders :) Though I may not be able to say the same for the parents. When the weather shapes up, we will be taking our little flutes out to the outdoor classroom to practice. Grade 5/6 has begun filming their music videos, booking extra time with their groups outside of school even! After a big discussion about representing lyrics literally vs. developing deeper meaning in their video, students enhanced their storyboard. Let's see if it pans out! |
April 2019
Grade 1/2s continued their cultural music studies with a look at Indigenous Powwows and Regalia. With tutorials from Powwow Sweat, students explored a variety of dances and music, such as the jingle dress dance, traditional dance, fancy shawl and the grass dance. They even tried a drum circle! Grade 3/4 will learn yodeling, singing and dancing from Australia and Germany this month. Grade 5/6 has analyzed different music videos to create criteria for their project, and are painstakingly choosing the perfect song. Next steps for them will be to create a storyboard and get their equipment, costumes and props in order! |
March 2019
Students wrapped up drumming! Grade 1/2 enjoyed the book "The Water Hole", 3/4s presented delicious rhythms, and 5/6s worked hard to present entertaining drum compositions. In March, classes will embark on a mini cultural unit. Grade 1/2 and 3/4 will learn a variety of French songs and games. Grade 5/6 will dive into a larger project as they begin to develop music videos in small groups based on the theme: "Feel Good Songs - Music for Positive Mental Health". |
February 2019
Students are full swing into djembe drumming, with some disruption due to the Trickster Residency. In grade 1/2, students will explore different ways to keep the beat and make the sound of a rain storm. Grade 3/4's will create different rhythms in a "Food-A-Licious" rhythm activity. And grade 5/6s will develop their own drumming compositions through a variety of rhythms from different cultures, and their new-found ability to create rhythms from phrases they invent: "if you can say it, you can play it." |
January 2019
In the month of January, students will reflect on the winter concert as they enjoy video clips from the amazing performance. Students will begin a look at West African music and percussion, including bean bags and djembe drums, shakers and sticks. They will also be critically analyzing music from West Africa as well as the Caribbean.

Congratulations to students for the outstanding winter concert "Back to the Future"!!! Our MCs Sophia and Jack did a superb job as well! Many thanks for the parent volunteers with decorating the gym for a time travel extravaganza as well as clean up the next day. And again, Mrs. Hodgson was tireless in helping with choir, creating our program, organizing seating and participating in the show! The concert this year was yet again another huge success. |
November 2018
November is preparation month for the winter concert! This year's winter concert will be on Tuesday, December 18, 2018. Please email Mrs. Lygo at [email protected] if your student will be absent from the winter concert.
The theme this year is from the movie "Back to the Future"! After watching snip-its from the 1980s movie, students were excited to get started! You may have some requests at home to watch the movie. As this movie is rated PG-13, please use caution when giving permission to watch! Many thanks to the parent volunteers on the Winter Concert committee. We're all looking forward to the decorations this year!
Congratulations to all the students who joined choir this year! Everyone is very excited for our line-up. For our song "All I Want For Christmas Is You" there will be a solo opportunity, and auditions for this part will be on Thursday, November 29th.
It is helpful for students to practice and memorize choir lyrics at home. Please click on the links below to sing along! **Some of the lyrics have changed for appropriate use at school.

Students wrapped up recorders and ukuleles and are now enjoying the djembe drums! The grade 1/2s in Mr. Backwell's class are creating a special composition for the Volunteer Tea and look forward to sharing it with you! Grade 3/4 are playing a variety of drumming games, while grade 5/6s create polyrhythms with a variety of rhythms from across the world. Grade 5/6 will be creating their own jam session in small groups. What does djembe mean? The djembe is the goblet shaped drum from West Africa. As for the origin of the word, the truth may be lost in the mists of time. The word is often found to mean different things in different parts of West Africa. There are several claims to its origin. Abdoul Doumbia, a Djembefola from Ségou in Mali explains that the word 'jembe' comes from two Bambara words, 'Dièn' which means unity and 'Bin' that signifies harmony. |

April 2018
The month of April was hoppin' with hip hop! Josh - our awesome dance coach from Sound Kreations - choreographed an amazing show with our students! Thanks so much to Josh for making this dance experience fun, memorable and energized. Also in the month of April, kindergarten began exploring the sound of rain and grade 1/2's experimented with more instruments, including the piano, the rain stick and the djembe drums. Grade 3/4 marched on bravely towards their recorder karate black belt, and grade 5/6 fine-tuned their ukulele songs. The music schedule was shortened this month due to school presentations and field trips. |
March 2018
March went by so fast!
The music room was filled with the sounds of kindergarten and grade 1/2s on the Orff instruments, grade 3/4s battling out Recorder Karate and grade 5/6s practicing their own hand-picked ukulele songs for future performing and recording!
Great to see everyone venturing into the music room for student-led conferences! Students were brave and confident to share their musical ability with their families and even do some teaching of their own!

A highlight of February was certainly our whole-school field trip to the Jack Singer Concert Hall. Students were willingly subjected to activities in Music to learn about the instruments of the orchestra and the composers we would be listening to at the show. The show itself was an amazing mix of music, live entertainment and audience interaction. Thank you to Parent Council for providing the funding for this awesome experience! |
February 2018

In Music, students were introduced in November to the ukulele in grade 5/6 and recorder in grade 3/4, learning the basics of playing notes, chords and reading sheet music. These grades will continue to develop singing, musical reading, and playing a melody with instruments in January. In grade 1/2, students completed their Fall Rhythm Art after practice and execution of the Remembrance Day assembly. Congratulations to these students for a very formal affair and a well-performed song! Grade 1/2 students will be exploring singing while playing instruments in harmony through Orff instruments (also known as xylophones and glockenspiels!).
Not enough positives can be sent out to express how amazed I was at the performances of the students of Elbow Park School! This year's winter concert was a huge success, and I am so very proud of each and every student for practicing songs, learning lyrics, creating choreography and coming up costumes and outfits! Their dedication to being prepared for concert night and performing to the best of their ability. Many thanks as well to our awesome parent volunteer committee for decorating and cleaning up!
