April 2019
Lacrosse! Thank you to Roughnecks players Dan Taylor and Bobby Sneider for their amazing coaching. Students have been excited all week and have gained amazing skills in scooping the ball, passing and shooting. Lacrosse will carry on after the coaches make their way back to professional athlete land. Good luck boys! |
March 2019
March was a mish-mash of skipping routines, basketball and fun with the large parachute. With dribbling, passing and shooting on their side, students played a variety of both competitive and non-competitive basketball-style games. The large parachute is a riot! We even managed to sneak in some work with hula hoops, juggling and scooter races. Thank you to the Irish dancers for performing for St. Patrick's Day! We even got to see world famous champion Mackenzie Mahler!! |
February 2019
February was a rocky schedule for gym with the Trickster Theater troop in. With me, students were in the music room doing a variety of activities from music games, to rhythm creations, to GoNoodle and Just Dance. Thank you to students for being so flexible!
February has begun basketball, though we will be moving into skipping for a couple of weeks in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation and Jump Rope for Heart!
On February 25th, students will join with the Heart and Stroke Foundation for Jump Rope for Heart. The school will be collecting donations to fund critical research that’s saving lives, preventing heart disease and stroke, and supporting survivors and their families.
Imagine kids skipping and playing with their classmates as they celebrate raising funds for critical research. That’s Jump Rope for Heart. At least part of it. Designed for students in elementary school, Jump Rope for Heart offers much more than a great day of fun. They also help to:
Thanks to the support of parents, teachers and principals, Jump’s popularity continues to grow. Close to 4,000 schools across Canada will embrace Jump Rope for Heart. And the program is building to 1 million kids Jumping this year alone. Heart and Stroke gives thanks to Elbow Park School for participating in this event! Our goal as a school is $2000, and we hope to celebrate meeting our goal with a school skip-off along with other fun activities on March 8.

January 2019
January carried on with floor hockey, as students built excitement for game play and new challenges! There will be a floor hockey club starting up soon! Students will be bringing home letters to inform you of their interest, and teams will be with the help of a couple of grade 6 hockey enthusiasts. Pickle Ball will also be coming to Elbow Park School! We hope students enjoy this short but fun inservice with Kevin Doucet from Mount Royal University. |
September 2018 Thank to Mrs. O'Reagan and Mrs. O'Leary for volunteering this year for our Terry Fox Run! There was a great turn out this year, as we tried a new route right around our school property. Each lap was about half a km. Thank you as well to all teachers and students seeking leadership opportunities who helped to plan and execute this annual event. September included:

May 2018
Inspired by a teacher at Nelson Mandela High School, Calgary Bike to School Day is on Tuesday, June 5th! We encourage students to bike or scooter to school to support active ways of getting to and from school. Please remind your students they need to walk their wheels while on school property. The bikes will be stored safely for the day. Wear a helmet and see you out there! |
May 2018
Students are full swing into soccer! With the weather as amazing as it is right now, there have plenty of days to take advantage of the outdoor soccer field during gym time. The unit began with Belly Baseball indoors, then moved outdoors to work on footwork, passing, shooting and goal tending. Students are into the full field games, if they can survive the mosquitos! Next week gymnastics will begin, starting with the gymnastics mats and creative movement. |
April 2018
Basketball was a hit in the month of March! Students picked up many skills, such as dribbling, free-throws, rebounds, lay-ups, jump shots, offence, defence...the list goes on! Confidence built as students were given the opportunity to play full-court basketball on teams of 5, really giving the full experience of actual game-play. Though, they also very much enjoyed our casual game-play, such as Bump, Ghost tag, Sharks and Minnows and Scarecrow Tiggy! In the week leading up to April, students took up the skipping rope and started jumping, participating in learning basic skills, skipping challenges, and a variety of different moves. Students were given the opportunity to create their own skipping routine in small groups to music of their choice, in preparation for the upcoming dance residency. Yay for Sound Kreations! Thank you once again for our dance hero, Josh from Sound Kreations. The moon walk, the back slide, the James Brown and the robot are only a few dance moves to name! The kids learned a ton and had another ton of fun putting their dance moves together for an awesome sharing day. To polish off the month of April, we set up the badminton nets and hit that shuttlecock. Students rotated through a variety of single, partner and small group activities, honing in on extension skills, hand-eye coordination and formal and informal game play. Students were also given the opportunity to try out alternative equipment, such as the lolli-pop paddles and balloons. In the month of May students will play soccer, belly baseball, kickball and other kicking sports before gymnastics begins. |
February 2018
Students have been busy with the Phys. Ed. program, rotating through a variety of activities, such as snowshoeing in the school yard, cross-country skiing with Nordic Ski, and building stick handling, shooting, and defensive skills in floor hockey. We do have goalie pads with helmets, and have discussed extensively safe play in the gym. The established rules for floor hockey at school are to #1: keep your stick below your waist at all times, and #2: no slap shots. Thank you to all students and parents for understanding the need for these safety measures. |
December 2017
In gym, volleyball in November was a big hit at EPS! They developed skills in bumping, setting and serving, communication, as well as how to rotate and move on a volleyball court. Our final days with the volleyball were finished off with beachball volleyball and the game "Kitimbi", which is a game played under the net. For the month of December, students played a variety of cooperative games, working in small teams to strategize with different sports equipment in a variety of game setting. In January, we will be changing our physical environment to the outdoors, trying out our new snowshoes and receiving special cross-country ski training from the Nordic Ski Centre! As well, students will begin stick exploration through floor hockey.

October 2017
Thank you to everyone who attended this year’s Terry Fox Run! Students enjoyed the adventurous trek down to the Elbow Park this year, and the day brought for us beautiful weather and fond memories. Many thanks go to all parent volunteers who supervised the intersections on our way to the run! Students in grade 3 to 6 have been engaged in a variety of Football skill-building activities and games, and weather permitting, outside. As Rideau Park School has requested the use of our gym for practice while their facility is being repaired, we will also begin learning about bumping, setting and serving within the realm of volleyball. Down in the gym, our new curtains have recently been installed, completing our ability to blackout the entire area for concerts, assemblies and presentations. This year’s Tech Crew has explored how to set up the curtains and drapes, projection system and sound equipment. We are truly fortunate to have the privilege of using this state-of-the-art equipment, and students are excited for future gatherings in this awesome space. |

September 2017
In the spirit of staying active and talking about how we care for ourselves and others when we are physically active, students are encouraged to bring in a photo or phrase describing different physical activities they participate in. These photos and phrases will create a collage on the gym bulletin board for the school to see all the ways students of Elbow Park get active within and around their community! The activities do not have to be sports, just simple different ways students get active, such walking their dog or gardening! Please bring photos or photo prints on paper if you or your child are interested in participating. You may also email images to Ms. Herman at [email protected]. Our two questions are: How does Elbow Park School stay active? How do we take care of ourselves and each other when we're active? |
